The long Group 4 messages are built from fields, and every field is closed by a marker. Read that way, 175 of the 257 parse into marker-closed rows with nothing left over — a two-part head, a run of 22-character blocks, a 9-character trailer, and a small set of optional parts — and 15 more do the same apart from row A, whose echo went missing for a stretch of 2023 and 2024. Their lengths come out of one formula; what falls outside it has its own sections below.

Four identical characters. Closes the B field and every body block; sits at the slot. 76% of all slots. A triple with one more character (LLL2) does the same job in one message.

First and fourth character equal. Closes the A field (positions 21–24) and the A′ field of an extra head. At a slot with no quad it sits five before the slot (13 + 4) — or, rarely, one past it (18 + 4), or in the slot itself as it does in row A.

Two identical characters, not part of a longer run. Closes the short fields of the ##-runs, the 3 + ## stub, and most of the 108's fields. In 7 messages it also stands in for the quad, filling the first two characters of every marker slot while the last two run on as text; and in 9 it closes row A in place of the echo, in the field's last two characters (9 against 1.3 expected).

A row is a field plus its marker, and rows break only at markers; the trailer is the last nine characters, and its first two name the next field of the prefix's list (62 of 68 messages that end on a quad-closed field). Every card below is rendered from that rule alone — markers are computed, never hand-placed — and the copy dot before a message puts its full string on the clipboard.

A 22-character block is three kinds of character. The opener (1–5), the anchor (11) and the quad are the frame: they say which field this is, and they are the same every time the field is sent under a prefix. Positions 1, 5, 12 and 13 are the version: a field comes in two or three versions that differ only there, and one message uses one version for every field it carries. The rest, 6–10 and 14–18, are the values: 32 symbols at full entropy, no checksum, and not one repeated five-character group in 884. Under each position: how often it agrees between a reused block and its source, over the 442 reused blocks (chance 3%).

The version switches in lockstep. Three BV fields, every airing: the version characters are as first seen or changed, and on 250122 all three switch at once while the grey values are new every time. Across the set, of the message pairs that share two or more fields, almost all use the same version for every shared field or a different version for every one.

And the trailer points ahead. A message carries the first n fields of its prefix's list; the trailer's first two characters are the head of field n + 1, in 62 of the 68 messages that end on a quad-closed field (chance 0.1%). Two characters are enough: within a prefix, 515 of 520 heads name a single field. The trailer's other seven characters agree with nothing tested so far.

Read it as an inventory, not a template. It counts the parts and always sums to the length, but it does not fix their order: in 23 messages the blocks come after the extra head — PR + A + B + 3 blk + A′ + B′ + 4 blk + T is the 286 — and in the 210 the run comes before them. Two things sit outside it: A′ + 35, a tail with no closer at all (the 172, 194 and 216), and the 108 and 176, which have no blocks at all and are written in their own field sizes. The census at the end draws every length in these parts, taken from each message's own rows, so it shows the order the message used.

Two of the parts are runs of short ##-closed fields, and they are not the same object. run23 opens with a 2 + X??X field — present in 12 of its 14 appearances — and continues 3 + ##, 4 + ##, 4 + ##. run29 opens with 9 + ## and continues 6 + ##, 2 + ##, 4 + ##, and never carries that opening echo in any of its 15. Where a run sits is what changes with length: in the 56 and the 62 it is the whole body, PR + A + run + T; after an A′ it is the tail that replaces the last two blocks; in front of a B-shaped row it does the work of an extension. So the short forms and the long ones are the same construction with different amounts in front of the run — 166 − 62 = 104 = B + 3 blk + A′, and 94 − 56 = 38 = B + A′.

The 56 and the 62 are one family in every respect but which run they use: they share three of their nineteen days (0.41 expected, p = 0.005), and both were closer-free until 240609 and closed ever after — the first closed 56 and the first closed 62 went out under the same prefix 59 minutes apart. The 108 belongs here too: four of its five messages carry the run23 entire, at 25–47, before going on to fields the block grammar does not use.

A cheap test for the run as a tail: a clean double exactly 11 from the end. Inside the k = 0 series that double splits by how the last block is closed — quad-closed 1 of 92, echo-closed A′ then stub 9 of 10.
連なりが末尾にあるかを手軽に確かめる目安は、末尾からちょうど11文字の位置にある単独の二重文字です。k = 0の系列の中では、この二重文字があるかどうかは最後のブロックの閉じ方で分かれます。4連文字で閉じるものでは92件中1件、X??Xで閉じるA′のあとに断片が続くものでは10件中9件です。
Left and right move along a series one length at a time, including lengths the formula reaches that have not been heard yet; up and down move through every message of that length — standard parses first in broadcast order, then the variants, then those whose row A lost its echo, then any that do not parse. The line above the card names where you are: the length, its n and k, which message of how many, and how it parses. Arrow keys work once a deck has focus.

Flip up and down through the decks above and the cards look like variants of one another. They are: long messages under one prefix are partial copies of earlier ones. Seeding on shared six-character runs and scoring every offset, 145 pairs share far more identical characters at one constant offset than chance allows (z ≥ 15; same-day re-reads excluded) — and all of them are the same prefix. An exhaustive scan of all 36,315 pairs, which also catches copies with no six-character run in common, raises that to 169, still every one of them same-prefix; none crosses a prefix change. What is kept follows the block: positions 1–4, 10–12 and 18–22, which carry the marker, are kept about 63% of the time, while two five-character windows, 5–9 and 13–17, are re-keyed (18% identical). Row A is never copied; the trailer is. A long message is a frame with two payload windows per block.

The offsets are mostly 0, ±22 or ±44 (a block), or the 40 of an extension — the same body re-issued in a different frame. Any resemblance between two long messages should be checked against this first; a cross-prefix copy would be the anomaly.

Two lengths have no blocks at all and are written entirely in short ##-closed fields. The 108 opens with the run23, as above, and then goes on with seven closers of its own, in the same places in four of its five messages. The 176 has twelve closers running at a spacing of six in three groups, the groups 40 apart. A run of three or more ## at spacing six occurs in no other message in the corpus, and in none of 300 shuffles of these two. Their rows are right-aligned so the closers line up.

62 messages carry no quad anywhere, so they have no grid of block markers at all. 27 of them still read: the run-carrying short forms, the 108 and the 176, and the 68, which puts one long echo-closed field between A and the trailer and ends on eight rather than nine. The other 35 are the bulk of what this page cannot read — though most still open the same way, with a closer at position 24 where row A ends, in 15 of the 19 longest. Within a length the evidence for anything further is thin: a shared closer or two, holding on two or three members.

One row per length. The bar shows how that length is built, part by part in the order its messages use, drawn to scale: each part is as wide as its characters. The colour says how a part is closed. "Built this way" counts the messages that match the bar; anything else is listed under it.

Strings are the transcribed broadcasts: disregards excluded, the one INCOMPLETE read excluded, one copy per distinct message. Lengths are read on air for any message over 30 characters, so long-message lengths are ground truth. Positions count from 1, as on the heatmap pages. Markers are computed from the rules above, never hand-placed; incidental X??X windows are left visible so the base rate is not hidden. Generated by eam_long_grammar_.py from SHORTWAVES.
